Youngsters having fun at Soccer Schools

The Community Trust Soccer Schools have been taking place at St Mary’s Catholic High School since the school holidays began.

The Soccer Schools provide children with a fun, safe, secure and social environment to thrive and have fun while participating in football and other activities.

Liam Colesey, one of the coaches on the Soccer Schools, told us why he feels it’s so important for children of that age to be involved within sport in the summer holidays. He said: “We’ve had loads going on here this week, kids of all ages and gender taking part in football and having fun.

“We’ve had a fun and competitive football tournament going on and we’ve been ensuring there’s lots of fun and different activities for all the kids to enjoy.

“I think it’s massive that kids come down and take part in these camps. In this day and age, so many kids are playing on their Xbox or PlayStation but this provides them with an opportunity to get out and play some sport, have some fun and be social with the coaches and their peers.”

When asked about the best part of the Soccer School Camps, Liam commented: “For me it’s just seeing the smiles on the kids’ faces.

“It’s a great day for everyone, they all have lots of fun and that’s what it’s all about at the end of the day. Just having lots of fun.”

Liam also had a message to anyone thinking of attending the camps, saying: “Give it a go, it’s fantastic. You’ll have so much fun; we will make it one of the best days of your life, I promise you that!”

The all-girls Soccer School has also been running alongside the mixed Soccer School, providing girls between the ages of 5-15 with the opportunity to play football in an all-female environment.

Tilly, one of the leaders on the girls’ Soccer School, said she feels the England Lionesses’ success has helped drive the female camps. She said: “It’s vital to get the girls involved in football at such a young age, it’s great for them.

“If they get involved so young then they’re hopefully going to be able to play with England when they get older and play with more of their peers at a good level. It’s going to be great for them.

“Some of them talk about them (the Lionesses) and what they’re doing. It’s good for them to look up to their role models.”

Tilly also had a message for anyone thinking of attending the camps, adding: “Just come down, even if you’ve never played football before, come down.

“We’ll teach you and help you to play football and most importantly you will have lots of fun while doing it!”

The mixed Soccer Schools [ages 5-13] take place Monday to Thursday, 9.30am to 3.30pm and cost ???????????????? £20 per day.
