Former Spireite Steve Baines is set to walk a marathon distance to raise money for the Alzheimer’s Society.
Baines, who made over 100 appearances for Chesterfield between 1983 and 1987, explained why he is taking on the challenge.
He said: “We’re looking to do a charity event on August 12th to raise money for the Alzheimer’s Society in memory of two poignant names, Jeff Astle and our good friend Ernie (Moss).
“Also, Steve Smith, my ex-captain at Huddersfield, who is now in a care home, so it is really in memory of them.
“It’s primarily about doing something positive and I’d like to raise awareness and raise significant funds if possible.”
Baines is aiming to complete the ‘Trek 26’. “It’s out of Bakewell and up and around Chatsworth and totals up to 26.2 miles so it’s effectively a marathon,” he explained.
“We’re out there early doors, probably seven o’clock in the morning I’ll start and finish around eight hours later.”
A JustGiving page has been set up where donations can be made.
“Every penny, every pound counts,” said the former central defender. “It goes towards helping a lot of people. It’s sadly a very debilitating disease and we’d like to do something positive if we can.
“It’s about making a difference, if we can help those less fortunate than ourselves and make it a better life for them while they’re here then that’d be great.”
Baines has been a keen supporter of the Spireites in Mind meetings that have taken place at the stadium over the last few months. “They’ve been great,” he said. “It’s a super cause and a super idea, long may it continue.”
